Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Hampton Wick, Kingston Upon Thames
Is a painless and non-invasive therapy that involves breathing oxygen in a pressurised chamber.
HBOT is commonly used for overall health and wellbeing including anti-ageing and beauty, sports endurance, and recovery, improving energy levels and in the management of chronic conditions. It is also used by athletes and after cosmetic surgery to expedite the healing after injury and surgery.
Our bodies depend on oxygen for survival. A lack of oxygen can decrease blood flow, damage tissues, and cause premature ageing, cause the hair to thin, and even affects memory. HBOT helps with these improvements providing an increase in oxygen naturally.
HBOT promotes general health and wellbeing, increases energy, boosts the immune system, helps with pain relief, stress management, improves mental clarity and may help regulate sleep patterns. It is restorative, relaxing, and rejuvenating.
There are different types of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chambers. The type of HBOT used in hospitals are large, hard-shell chambers with a pressure of 2-2.5 ATA (Atmosphere Absolute) (Note: 1 ATA is the pressure at sea level). These are used to treat a wide range of serious conditions, including radiation injury, poisoning and sickness in divers.
The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chambers used in a wellbeing setting as our clinic are typically soft-shell chambers (or sometimes still hard-shell) operating at lower pressure, between 1.3-1.5 ATA. Our chamber is a Henshaw 1662 horizontal chamber with 1.3ATA pressure. It can easily fit an adult and a smaller child.
Oxygen is important for our health. 90% of our daily energy comes from oxygen, and the human brain uses 25% of the oxygen we breathe. Oxygen is what contracts our muscles, repairs our cells, feeds our brains, and even calms our nerves, it is also our chief cleansing tool. Every day, our body burns off some seven hundred billion old cells. These old cells are toxic and must be removed from our system, if there is low oxygen in the body it struggles to do so, and can lead to disease, infection, and tissue destruction.
When do we use an HBOT
Some typical situations when HBOT is used in a wellbeing setting: promotes the growth of new blood vessels in the brain, reduces recovery times for athletes enhancing performance and improving endurance. HBOT can help after surgery to reduce swelling, fight infection, build new blood vessels, producing healthy tissues. HBOT can provide quick, strong, and long-lasting pain relief while reducing inflammation. Overall is a great way to naturally enhance your quality of life.
The experience
As HBOT is a pressurised air therapy, the start and end of your session may feel like the take-off or landing of an airplane. As the pressure builds in the chamber, the pressure also builds within your ears, which may leave you with an ear-popping or fullness sensation. Once the required pressure is reached you may feel sleepy, and you can relax and breathe normally for the duration of your session.
There are several stages to a typical therapy session.
- The first stage is compression in which the chamber is pressurised to the prescribed pressure
- You may feel warm for a few minutes at the start of your session
- You may feel a slight pressure in your ears or sinuses throughout the therapy
- The chamber is maintained at this pressure (depth) whilst you breathe in the oxygen
- You may feel sleepy during the session
- The chamber is then depressurised and the therapy is finished
- You may feel cool and slightly tired afterwards, but some might feel really energised
Safety
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is extremely safe. The pressure used in our HBOT chamber is mild, and therefore any side effects are extremely rare.
As safe as HBOT is, here are some ways that you can reduce further your risk:
- Keep to lower pressures if possible
- Give yourself a minimum of 4 hours between sessions
- Try to limit your session to 60 minutes
- If you are inside an oxygen-rich chamber, make sure that the clinic follows strict guidelines for fire safety procedures.
- Make sure that you have something to eat before HBOT and are not running into any problems with blood sugar, particularly low blood sugar. If diabetic, speak to your hyperbaric attendant
- Make sure that your HBOT centre has proper safety training, particularly in pressurization techniques and skills to help reduce adverse reactions.
The 40 Hour Hyperbaric Protocol:
The ’40-hour protocol’ is considered by experts as the gold standard for many of the physiological benefits that can be achieved with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. But everyone is different, so your exact therapy programme will be personalised to you and your needs.
Results will inevitably vary depending on your personal programme, situation and needs. Some people will see immediate benefits, whereas others may not see any benefits until after their therapy series is complete.
Usually, a daily application of HBOT for as many as 40 sessions can have the best results in helping to gain the full physiological benefits. It is not uncommon to have 2 sessions / day, however a minimum 4-hour break is recommended between sessions.
Typically, 5 days are recommended / week with 2-day rest period each week. With this protocol, a full 40 hours of HBOT can be accomplished in one month (with twice daily applications) or two months (if only HBOT session was performed daily).
Research
While there is a lot of research on HBOT use for many different chronic conditions, there are no definite answers (e.g. most recent trials are related to long-covid). Please feel free to do your own reading on these trials. A known expert in this field is Dr. Zayd Ratansi who in his 18 years working with HBOT observed numerous benefits. You can read the trials Dr Ratansi gathered. See physiological benefits on Dr Ratansi’s website: Physiological Benefits – @Hyperbaric Experts.
